Julia Smit

As a high school student-athlete, Smit set New York State records in the 100 yard backstroke and 200 IM, swimming with the Three Village Swim Club.

At the 2007 Pan American Games, Smit won the gold medal in the 100m backstroke, 200m IM, 4x100m freestyle relay, and 4x100m medley relay. Smit also won a silver medal in the 200m backstroke.[1]

At the 2008 US Olympic Team Trials, Smit finished third in the 200m freestyle and sixth in the 100m freestyle, earning berths for the 4x100 and 4x200 meter freestyle relays. Smit also finished third in the 400m IM at trials. Smit was part of the silver medal winning team of the 4x100m freestyle relay and the bronze winning team in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the 2008 Summer Olympics, after she swam in the heats of both.

On November 28, 2008, Smit set her first world record at the Canada Cup in Toronto, breaking Kirsty Coventry's short course 400m IM record.[2]

At the 2009 US National Championships and World Championship Trials, Smit won her first national title in the 200m IM in 2:09.34, setting a new American record.[3] Smit also placed second in the 400m IM and fourth in the 100m freestyle with a career-best 54.38. Smit will swim the 200m IM, 400m IM, and 4x100m freestyle relay at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships in Rome. At the World Championships, Smit placed ninth in the 200m IM (2:10.29), barely missing a place in the final.[4] Smit also swam in the preliminaries of the 4x100 freestyle, which placed fourth in the final, and the freestyle leg of the 4x100m medley, which did not advance to the final.

As a college swimmer at Stanford, Smit is a three-time NCAA champion, having won the 400 yard IM in 2008 and both the 200 and 400 yard IM in 2009. Smit is the current American record holder in the 200 and 400 yard IM (short course), and 200[6] and 400m IM (short course).
